History of Norwood
Norwood is a neighborhood (or village) in the city of Warwick, Rhode Island, USA. It is located in a northern region of Warwick, its northern (shortest) border being the Pawtuxet River and the city of Cranston, Rhode Island. Norwood's shape can be characterized as an imperfect pentagon, with its northern and southwestern borders fairly narrow, and its eastern and western borders being its longest. The fifth, median, border is Post Road (Route 1). Norwood's eastern border is Elmwood Ave, another part of Route 1. Norwood's western border is a set of Amtrak rail lines, which now divide streets once linked. The areas on the other side of the tracks is now considered Pocasset, and no longer a part of Norwood. These areas were linked until the late 1990s, when a bridge connecting the two neighborhoods (over the tracks) was torn down during Amtrak's rail upgrade. Norwood's southwestern border is RI state highway 37, which connects Warwick and Cranston to Routes 95 and 295.

Norwood can be thought of as a residential neighborhood, with two strips of commercial development along its borders of Post Rd. and Elmwood Ave. Among the businesses are: Suburban Pharmacy, Cygnet Income Tax & Bookkeeping, Manmade By Jonne Textile Studios, Cosmic Pizza, Pioneer Pizza, Dancing Feeling, Gregg's Restaurant, BP Gas, , BUSA Liquors, Alex's Barber Shop, Strand Jewelers, Ethnic Concepts, and other nutrition stores, auto mechanics, insurance agencies, and restaurants.
Inside of Norwood's residential area, aside from private residences, are: Norwood Elementary School, Boys and Girls Club of Norwood, Norwood Public Library, Norwood Baptist Church, St. Williams Church, and Norwood Field.
Norwood elementary has existed as a school since 1932, and serves grades K-6. Norwood Boys and Girls Club is located 2 blocks, or several hundred feet, from Norwood elementary . Norwood field includes a baseball diamond, playground, and basketball court, as well as a large vacant grassy area for various uses. The Norwood Neighborhood Association meets in the newly renovated Norwood Boys and Girls club.
